The Problem with “Free” pianos

So called “free” pianos are often a red flag for piano technicians for a piano with a lot of issues, or a piano that may not be tunable.

So, while a free piano may sound like a good idea, and are often free on the front end, they may wind up being expensive on the back end when you find out they need hundreds or even thousands of dollars of repair; perhaps far more than the value of the piano, or aren’t playable, or can’t hold a tuning anymore.

This is why it is always a good idea to have a piano inspected by a piano technician first before going through the expense of moving the piano.

If you’re already moved the piano, hopefully it turns out to be in reasonable condition, and that your piano just needs a little TLC and cleaning and tuning to bring it back to being an enjoyable instrument to play.

However, in the worst case scenario, the piano does turn out to be untunable, or costs more in repairs than you are willing to spend, most technicians will be happy to advise you on other avenues to find a more suitable piano, but may still need to charge for a Service Call for their time.
